Reports that the Gambling Commission has recommended setting the maximum stake for fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs) at £30 – in spite of calls from groups including the Church of England for the stake to be cut to £2. The Bishop of St Albans, Alan Smith, is quoted as saying that any stake on FOBTs higher than £2 ‘simply does not go far enough to protect the interests of the most vulnerable, their families and communities.’ (See also News from the Church of England, above)

Coverage following announcement at the weekend that the Bishop of Shrewsbury, Mark Rylands, is to step down from his role in order to return to parish ministry in Exeter Diocese. Bishop Mark is quoted as saying: “It will be sad to leave. And for some it may seem a surprise move. But, for me, I have sensed God’s beckoning to serve as a parish priest again. For the last 16 years, as both diocesan missioner and area bishop, much of my ministry has been to encourage, challenge and help churches and church leaders to embody and share the Good News of Jesus Christ in the local community. I have heard God calling me now to ‘go and walk the talk’.
