CNI Sketchbook – Anglican Covenant stocktake

In the past ten days the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia rejected the Anglican Covenant and the Episcopal Church in the USA voted to “decline to take a position on the Anglican Covenant,” and to continue to monitor the progress of the Covenant until the next General Convention in 2015.

There has been a major response to the C of E Synod’s decision  to strengthen ties with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), a group that supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel and stands accused of having an anti-Israel stance and harboring a “one-sided” narrative.

CNI Sketchbook – Women clergy in the Anglican Communion

The ordination of women has been a controversial issue throughout the Anglican Communion. By 2012, however, 28 of the 38 provinces of the Anglican Communion ordain women as priests and 17 have removed all barriers to women serving as bishops. Presented here is a timeline of events in the Anglican Communion and sources commenting on the development of the ordination of women in the Church of Ireland - a debate which commenced in the C of I in 1976 and led to the first ordinations in 1990 in Belfast Cathedral.

Over the past ten days the churches in New Zealand, the USA and England have held their General Synods - or national meetings. In the case of the latter two, the secular media have been dominated principally with one issue at each meeting.

Experience suggests that most parish notices announced in services are almost forgotten by the time the worship is over - or even sooner. An exception for me will be the one I heard last sunday in a rural village church in the north.
