The Church in Wales will this week consider taking a further step towards equality for gay clerics by providing improved pension rights for their civil partners.
Welcoming vicars will be answering questions such as "can I have a church wedding?" and "which version of the wedding service did I see on TV?", and will offer advice on all topics from hymns to fees, at the Church of England weddings stand, which is touring the country's main wedding shows in September and October .
A call for solidarity with the poor was delivered to a gathering of religious, political and civil society leaders from all over the world by one of the presidents of the World Council of Churches (WCC) which is being attended by the Archbishop of Armagh and the Bishop of Meath, and which was addressed by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
Permission for Roman catholic priests to marry and misgivings on child sex abuse have been the focus of recent concerns commented on by Bishop Edward Daly, Fr Brian D’Arcy, Fr Joe McVeigh who criticised the Irish state, and Fr Aidan Troy. And the Irish state is set to pay religious orders 30m euros for legal fees.
A report by Riazat Butt, in the Guardian today states that Richard Chartres, the bishop of London has denied suggesting it would be beneficial if the archbishop of Canterbury were to retire early, after it was claimed he was briefing against the most senior cleric in the Church of England.
