Archbishop Michael Jackson performed the official launch of ‘The Friars in Ireland 1224–1540’ by Brother Colman O Clabaigh OSB in St Teresa’s Priory on Clarendon Street, Dublin. Historians to revisit 1922 massacre of Protestants
Examiner – Several leading historians will be in Cork this weekend to discuss one of the bloodiest sectarian massacres of the War of Independence.The killing of 18 people in West Cork — all Protestant but one — at the end of Apr 1922 remains one of the most contentious events of the time.

Child advocate quits parish after discovery of ‘restricted’ priest
Irish times – A woman who was the child safeguarding representative in a Dublin Catholic parish for over a decade has resigned following her discovery last month that a priest serving there until recently had been on “restricted ministry” for years. It followed allegations of child sex abuse against him. She had also not been informed that the same priest was the subject of a chapter in the 2009 Murphy report on clerical sexual abuse.

Fornication views of TD personal, says Kenny
Independent.ie – Taoseach Enda Kenny has refused to take sides in the “fornication” storm started by his party and constituency colleague. Fine Gael Mayo TD Michelle Mulherin sparked controversy last week when she described fornication, or consensual sex between an unmarried couple, as the biggest cause of unwanted pregnancy.

Parents stage Dáil protest over care payment cuts
Examiner – More than 150 parents of children with special needs marched on the Dáil to highlight payment cuts they say will damage the quality of their children’s lives. The group wants to reverse the stopping of domiciliary care payments and is seeking a meeting with Social Protection Minister Joan Burton to discuss the issue.

Examiner -There has been an alarming increase in the number of young men seeking treatment for gambling addiction because of the popularity of online betting and ease of access to internet sites. Tabor Lodge, one of the largest treatment centres in the South, has recorded a 50% increase in those aged between 18 and 35 seeking help in the past two years.
