 Toddlers team–up for charity
The Toddler group at Christ Church Kilkeel (Down & Dromore) finished another successful year with a fundraising buggy push through the town.

Parents and children from both sides of the community took a sponsored stroll towards the beach and past the playground without stopping (that must have been difficult!) and back towards the church halls. The fact that hot dogs and other goodies awaited kept everyone going on a warm and sunny day.

“Our parents made a great effort as always,” said Toddler leader and the parish Family Outreach Worker, Lynda Quinn . “We were thrilled to be able to write cheques for £250 each to Macmillan Nurses and Headlines, both charities close to our hearts.”

Archdeacon of Derry welcomes Brooke Park Funding Boost
Archdeacon Robert Miller, who is also Rector of Christ Church Parish on Infirmary Road, has joined with the members of his parish in welcoming the news that Brooke Park is to be refurbished with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, in the form of a £1.45 million grant.

Archdeacon Miller said, ‘Christ Church Parish Church borders directly onto Brooke Park. I am absolutely delighted that Derry City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund have shown great imagination for the future of the Park. This represents a belief in the future.’

He continued ‘Brooke Park is a wonderful resource for the people of our local community. As Christ Church is also committed to enhancing our facilities for the good of local people we look forward to the developments that will soon take place.’

The Council has successfully secured Stage 2 funding from the HLF through their Parks for People Programme to support the estimated £5m Regeneration of Brooke Park Project, which will see a total regeneration of the park including its parkland, sports and leisure facilities.

SPAR and VIVO encourage shoppers to “milk it” for Tearfund
SPAR and VIVO, are encouraging shoppers to “milk it” this summer – 5p from every purchase of two–litre VIVO and SPAR semi–skimmed and full fat milk will be given to support Tearfund partners around the world.

It’s hoped the special milk promotion kicking off this month, and running until September, will raise £150,000 for Tearfund. This could be used to empower communities and help as many as 50,000 people work their way out of poverty.

“By selling three million two–litre packs of milk, the SPAR and VIVO stores hope to support thousands of families in some of the world’s poorest countries’ says Neal Kelly, Fresh Foods Director at Henderson Group. ‘It’s just a little of the cost of milk here, but the benefits will be hugely significant in changing lives through Tearfund’s self–help initiatives’.

“A succession of poor harvests, high food prices, chronic poverty and ongoing conflict has led to extreme vulnerability in many poor communities around the world ‘says Caroline Bradley,Tearfund in Northern Ireland and member of Willowfield Parish Church, Belfast. ‘As you enjoy your glass of milk today, not only will you be making a healthy choice, but you will be helping this promotion release many thousands from poverty for the long term.”
