Parish Development Officer takes up post


Trevor Douglas took up his post as Connor Diocesan Parish Development Officer on Wednesday August 1.

Trevor, 51, was previously manager of the Jethro Centre in Lurgan, He has also worked with Connor Diocese having been seconded through CREED for projects with churches in inner city Belfast.

Connor Diocesan Parish Development Officer is a new post, and Trevor’s role will be to support parishes throughout the diocese by advising on parish projects and development, facilitating training for leadership and team ministry and supporting strategic development across the diocese.

The Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, said: “Trevor’s expertise, experience and people skills will be of immense value to us all as we look to the future and the development of Connor Diocese.”

Father of two daughters, Trevor lives in Lurgan, Co Armagh, and is married to Karen.

Connor appointment


The Rev Gary Millar, rector of the Parish of St Paul and St Barnabas, Belfast, has been appointed as incumbent of the grouped Parishes of Ahoghill and Portglenone.
A native of Coleraine, Gary worked in computing before his ordination in Llandaff Cathedral, Wales in 1991. He was a curate in two parishes in the Diocese of Llandaff over a period of six years, before he was appointed Rector of Dromara and Garvaghy, Diocese of Down and Dromore, in 1997.

Gary moved to the incumbency of Kilkeel in 2001 and to St Paul and St Barnabas, Diocese of Connor, in 2008.

He is married to Gillian and the couple has four children.

The Institution has been arranged for Wednesday September 5.

Focus on Palestine
“I shall not hate” – talk by guest speaker Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish in St. Mary’s University College, Belfast. Sat. 4th August  2 p.m.

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish is a Palestinian medical doctor who founded the ‘Daughters for Life Foundation’ in memory of three of his daughters, killed by Israeli tank fire during the Israeli invasion of Gaza in 2008/9. Dr. Izzeldin speaks about how understanding and compassion can be tools to bridge the divide between Israelis and Palestinians. Includes a short film by Trócaire about Gaza.

Trócaire have been campaigning for justice and peace in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories for 10 years, working in partnership with human rights organisations on the ground. A Trócaire/Féile partnership.

National Heritage Week 2012


As always Christ Church, Dublin, is playing an active role in National Heritage Week, this year, it hosted the national launch.
Between the 20th and 24th August a series of talks and tours will be taking place, including a special belfry tour, tours of the monuments and talks about the history and music of the cathedral. 
All events are listed on the Heritage Week website and are free of charge (usual admission fees apply).

Bank Holiday Craft Market


This Bank Holiday Monday (6th August) from 12pm until 5pm there will be a craft market in the crypt at Christ Church, Dublin. A range of Irish made crafts and gifts will be available, including jewelry, textiles, handmade baby clothes, hats, handbags, jam and much more. Admission is free so no excuses not to drop in for a browse. 
Why not make a day of it and take a tour of the cathedral or even have a spot of lunch at one of the Irish Village Market stalls in the grounds.

Dublin recital
Charles Marshall (organ)will perform Brahms Op. 122, 11 Chorale Preludes, composed at the end of Brahms’ life and published posthumously, at a lunchtime recital in St Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, on Thursday August 9 at 1.15 pm. Admission is free and further information is available by contacting (01) 6767727.

Schools ‘should have to pay more costs’
Examiner – Schools need to cover more of the educational costs to help parents financially stretched to the limit, Barnardos has said.
The Barnardos School Costs Survey found that while the average cost of some school- related items fell, in other areas it increased. 

The survey of 987 parents showed many are almost permanently “living on the edge”
