Edinburgh church murals put social change in the picture
Ekklesia – The St John’s murals, now in their thirtieth year, are now a vital and unusual part of the heritage of St John’s Episcopal Church in Edinburgh, the Festival of Spirituality and Peace’s principal venue and partner.
The latest one will be unveiled next weekend, as the artist gets down to work after ‘crowd source’ discussions with a team of people earlier this week. Katie MacFayden reports.

The mural will be painted on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August and will be available to view until the end of the Festival. The Facebook page for the St John’s Murals can be found here (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Murals-at-St-Johns-Edinburgh/192612720787609). The church is at the corner of Princes Street and Lothian Road in the Scottish capital.
The tainted case against gay marriage

Panorama, Dispatches show cruelty of benefit crackdown
Ekklesia – The UK government’s harsh treatment of sick and disabled people claiming welfare benefits has largely been backed by the media, with some exceptions. This has helped fuel increasing hostility to disabled people from the public. But, unusually, in late July, two prime-time television documentaries exposed the bizarre tests used to falsely find people ‘fit for work’, and the human cost to claimants and their families.
On 30 July, Dispatches on Channel 4, and Panorama on BBC, investigated the ‘work capability assessment’ carried out by private company Atos on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions, on people seeking employment and support allowance. The findings add to the vast amount of evidence that the system is unfit for purpose, as even the severely ill and dying (including those who have paid National Insurance for many years) are all too often told to get a job.
