Bishop of Salisbury to become a Vice-President of RSCM
The Council of the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) has announced that the Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam is to become a Vice-President of the charity. The RSCM now has three Vice-Presidents, the others being the broadcaster and choral conductor, Brian Kay, and the Rt Revd David Stancliffe, the previous Bishop of Salisbury. See Music this site.

Nicholas Roderick Holtam read Geography at Durham University and subsequently trained for ordination at King’s College, London and Westcott House, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of King’s College London and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Durham University.  He served his curacy in Stepney in East London, taught at Lincoln Theological College and was Vicar of the Isle of Dogs at the heart of London’s Docklands.  Prior to his move to Salisbury last year, he was Vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, in London’s Trafalgar Square. He has written on a wide range of theological issues, and broadcasts extensively.

As Vice-President, Bishop Holtam will be upholding the work of a charity which supports and trains church musicians through a range of education programmes such as Voice for Life and Church Music Skills. The RSCM also publishes a variety of musical resources and service books.

Commenting on Bishop Holtam’s appointment, Lord Gill, Chairman of the RSCM Council, and Scotland’s most senior judge, said, “I am delighted that Bishop Nicholas has agreed to become a Vice-President. He is a man of profound theological depth. He appreciates the value of the relentless work of church musicians, and is always supportive and encouraging. We will value his counsel and expertise.”

Bishop Holtam said, “I became an RSCM chorister aged eight, and grew up singing in the choir of St Andrew’s Enfield in North London.  I am delighted the RSCM’s administrative centre is based in Salisbury and am honoured to become a Vice-President.”
