Anxieties about the Nativity play that could trip up the wisest of kings
Letter from the Daily Telegraph files –
SIR – I am currently rehearsing our village Nativity play, to be performed three times before Christmas. I am one of the three kings.
On our first meeting with King Herod, the director has us marching up the church aisle to the last movement, allegro, from Dvorák’s New World Symphony.
I have tried to persuade her that, as all three kings are of pensionable age, the adagio movement would be more appropriate.
We are all wearing long apparel and sandals, appropriate to the time, and the risk of toppling over while hurrying up the aisle is immensely worrying.
I wonder if an andante from some other composition might work.
