The Clerical and Lay Honorary Secretaries of the Dioceses of Meath and Kildare have issued the following statement on behalf of the members of Diocesan Synod and Diocesan Council
“It is with a deep sense of dismay and profound regret that we receive the news of the Venerable Leslie Stevenson’s decision to decline his appointment as the next Bishop of Meath and Kildare. Strenuous and adverse publicity, such as that shared in some of today’s newspapers, led to Leslie’s announcement of his intention to decline the appointment. Leslie generously withdrew his name to shield and protect the Dioceses of Meath and Kildare and for the general well-being of the Church. This is a hallmark of Leslie’s vocation and loyalty to the Church he serves. While we regret his resignation as bishop-elect, we accept and respect his decision.
“We offer our heartfelt support to Leslie and his family and commend them to God in prayer during these turbulent times. We also remember in our thoughts and prayers the members of the Portarlington and Monasterevin Union of Parishes and all members of the Dioceses of Meath and Kildare during these extraordinary circumstances and difficult days.”
The statement is signed by John Clarke and Rhonda Willoughby, Clerical and Lay Hon Secretaries.
