Newtownards rector retiring; Zion rector appointed; Children’s ministry post
Rector of Newtownards to retire
Canon Ken Smyth who has been rector of St Mark’s Newtownards for the past 28 years has announced his retirement with effect from 7th April 2011. Canon Smyth will remain as Church of Ireland Chaplain in the Ulster Hospital, a role he assumed at the start of 2011, and looks forward to attending to the spiritual needs of patients there.
New Zion Rector Announced
The Revd Stephen Farrell, currently curate assistant in Taney Parish, has been appointed Rector in Zion parish (Rathgar). Speaking of his appointment, Stephen said “I am delighted to have been appointed as Rector of Zion and am full of hope for the future. Laura and I are very much looking forward to making our home in the parish and to getting to know our new church family.”
Stephen has been the curate assistant in Taney Parish since June 2008. He was made deacon in June 2008 and ordained priested in June 2009. He is 26 years old and married to Laura, a barrister. He studied law in Jesus College, Oxford before entering the Church of Ireland Theological Institute and studying theology in Trinity College Dublin. He was a scholar of both institutions.
Vacancy for Children’s Ministry Coordinator
Bangor Parish seeks “to appoint a Children’s Ministry Coordinator with responsibility for leading children, (aged 3-11 years), to be disciples of Jesus Christ, and developing and leading a Children’s Ministry Team of adult volunteers”. Safeguarding Trust, the Church of Ireland’s code of good practice covering children’s ministry will be followed. Hours: 10 per week Pay: £5,000 per annum Applications must be received by 10am on 24th February. The post is anticipated to start in May 2011.
