Rosemary Kempsell, Worldwide President of Mothers’ Union on her visit to Ireland
It is very special to be enjoying the warmth of Irish hospitality as I join Mothers’ Union leaders in Ireland for their annual conference today at Termonfeckan, Drogheda. (March 4)
I arrived in Cork on Wednesday for several engagements in the diocese. Amongst these were two exciting visits to secondary school students. At Bandon Grammar Schools over a 100 transition year students engaged with the work in which Mothers’ Union is involved worldwide and in particular Africa. A group of students are shortly leaving for Ndola in Zambia with Habitat for Humanity, to build houses. They are looking forward to the experience and to making a difference for local people. I would bet that they will return to Ireland themselves changed by the experience. The session I had with the students was an interactive one and they were really enthusiastic about the opportunities that Mothers Union has to engage with local people. The students, both boys and girls, now know about the Literacy and Development programme and how it changes lives. Although in Southern Ireland and of course a different Government the Bye Buy Childhood Campaign is seen as very relevant here too. The young people at the Sacred Heart School, Clonakilty have a very different joint project with Mothers’ Union. In a workshop with their IT teacher and the Cork Mothers’ Union Community Development Worker they have produced guidelines for using the internet and social networking sites.
Cork Mothers’ Union has seen the opportunity for working effectively alongside young people and in a way that will also raise the profile of the organisation.
