SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

…two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, eleven kilometres from Jerusalem. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognising him.
Luke 24:13-16 NLT

One of my favourite paintings is Caravaggio’s Supper at Emmaus (above). The dramatic moment in which two disciples recognise the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. For me this walk to Emmaus is a very personal metaphor for my Christian life. Two disciples are confused following the events surrounding Jesus’ crucifixion. They’d expected the Messiah, now their hopes were dashed. This was just another tragic martyr to the cause of Jewish liberation. Despondent, they set off on the long walk home.

The Church fathers prayed often that God would deliver them from a spirit of despondency. This is because despondency steals our hope and courage. Enthusiasm for anything drains away and we sink into a low mood, even depression. This is open season for the work of the enemy, for the mind can only see disappointment and difficulties ahead.

Unrecognised, the risen Christ falls into step alongside our despondent disciples. Like me, Jesus may well be accompanying me through my challenge, yet failure to recognise Jesus prevents me from finding the faith I need for this stage of my journey. Life is a series of journeys, or short walks. On these walks we discover more about ourselves and the landscapes we walk through. It’s why pilgrimage is such a great lens through which to comprehend our lives. We are journeying towards the great embrace of God, but we are not there as yet, and there is trouble along the way.

Despondency, loss of hope and courage is an experience you must anticipate on your Christian walk. In such moments Jesus remains close, though unrecognised and even unrecognisable. God’s love for you is in no way diminished, just hidden. You’re invited to press on and find a fresh revelation of God’s reality relevant for you at this stage of your walk.

QUESTION

Is your “walk” currently smooth or rocky?
