Climate Justice Candle visits Kilbride Parish
The Rev Canon David Humphries, rector, and parishioners in Kilbride, with the Climate Justice Candle
Kilbride Parish Church welcomed Eco-Congregation Ireland’s Climate Justice Candle at its Service of Morning Prayer on February 9.
Eco-Congregation Ireland (ECI’s) ‘Shine a Light on Climate Justice’ initiative was launched at the National Ecumenical Prayer Service for COP21 in the presence of President Michael D. Higgins in November 2015.
The climate Justice Candle has been journeying around Ireland since then.
ECI is a project initiated by the Church in Society Forum – a standing committee of the Irish Inter-Church Meeting. The Roman Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist churches are involved, as well as the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
Climate Justice is a term used for framing global warming as an ethical and political issue, rather than one that is purely environmental or physical in nature. ECI encourages churches of all denominations to take an eco approach to worship, lifestyle, property and finance management, community outreach and contact with the developing world.
Kilbride Parish Church has developed its own environmental stewardship policy, and is presently encouraging parishioners to adopt a spiritual and practical means of looking after God’s world.
