Memorial charity swim will aid Bray parish

Bray Parish will be one of he charities to benefit when five members of a Bray family honour their late father by taking the plunge in the 2012 Bray Charity Sea Swim organised by Bray Lions Club.

Anne Tuohy, Deborah Matthews, Paula Gaskin, Peter and David Dixon are helping raise funds for local charities in memory of their father, Peter Dixon who died in November aged 55.

‘Our Dad was a dedicated swimmer who swam from Bray Beach every day of the year’, said Anne. ‘When we were children he took us to the beach and taught us to swim. The beach was our playground and we had picnics and games there.’

Peter, who was a stonemason by trade, was a staunch supporter of Bray Charity Sea Swim and joined in the event for more than 20 consecutive years, according to his daughter. ‘He enjoyed swimming with so many people and raising money for good causes.’

Hundreds of swimmers have already signed up to participate in the 2012 Bray Charity Sea Swim which will raise funds for five local charities – Bray Carers Association, Order of Malta, Church of Ireland Bray Poor Relief Fund, Holy Redeemer Youth Centre and Bray Lions Senior Citizens Holiday Fund.

These organisations will join a list of more than 30 charities which have been supported by the Sea Swim over its 29 years, during which more than €250,000 has been raised.

The 2012 Sea Swim will be held at the Southern end of Bray Seafront at 12 midday on New Year’s Day. The organisers would be delighted to hear from any volunteers ready to brave the waves on behalf of this year’s nominated charities.
