74 year old Rector will sleep out under the stars for the homeless

A 74-year-old clergyman will sleep out in his front garden this Friday night to help the homeless.

Revd Canon Peter Tarleton of St Peter’s Church in Portlaoise will host the overnight sleep-out, to raise funds for Portlaoise Action Towards Homelessness (PATH).

This is the second year the Church of Ireland community has organised a sleep-out under the stars at the Rectory on the Mountmellick Road. Eighteen people took part last year and raised €4,500 for PATH, with donations from individuals and businesses and a bucket collection at the sleep-out.

Due to Covid-19 social distancing, numbers this year will be limited to 12. Revd Tarleton and guests will lie out in sleeping bags on cardboard from 8pm until 8am, followed by a restorative breakfast in the Rectory kitchen.

PATH volunteers travel to Dublin every Saturday night with sleeping bags, food, drinks, toiletries, hats, scarves and gloves for people sleeping rough on the streets. Equally important is the chat and human interaction with people going through terrible times.

It will be the last of many charitable campaigns for Revd Tarleton, who will retire to Thailand on 30 August after two years in Portlaoise and seven years in Killeshin. There are still a few places available on the sleep-out. Anyone interested can contact Revd Tarleton at [ peter.tarleton@hotmail.co.uk. ]

Journalist recalls two especial encounters with John Hume

A woman walks past the Bogside mural in Derry City of John Hume, Martin Luther King Jr, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela

Henry McDonald commented – “In between writing of his passing I have been mining through the memory bank for many, many personal stories I have of John Hume. Two encounters standing out. Firstly, we were having a beer in the Wellington Park at an SDLP conference and I brought up the issue of the ‘Single Transferable Speech’, his endless mantras at shedding sweat not blood, you can’t eat a flag et etc. Hume looked at me and tapped the table and said something like: ‘Henry, it was Tip O’Neill who told me do that. To keep repeating the key lines of your philosophy over and over again until you convince people that you are right or at least that they will give you a hearing.’ And of course both men were right.

“The second time was interviewing him for a television clip in Derry and being astonished that he appeared, nervous, shaky and uncertain before the camera and audio was turned on. Of course once we started filming he was first class and gave perfect soundbites. But even after we put away the toys John put his hand on my shoulder and asked if that sounded ok? I was astonished. ‘My God John it was spot on as it always is..’ Later it struck me that his diffidence was a product of his humility. There was nothing arrogant or cock sure about this consummate political operator and it made him all the more humane and down to earth. RIP John. Deepest condolences to Pat and all the Hume family.”

South Sudan Anglicans killed

South Sudan Bishop Moses Anur Ayom spoke to Religion Unplugged about the recent murder of Anglicans:

At least 23 people were killed this week and 20 others were wounded after unidentified gunmen stormed an Anglican church compound in South Sudan’s Anglican Diocese of Athooch, in Jonglei State. The assailants took six children as hostages….

The gunmen attacked Makol Chuei village from two directions, killing the cathedral’s deacon and at least 14 women and children who had sought refuge in the church compound by vandalising the church, destroying their worship instruments and then setting the area ablaze along with the entire village.

“After killing people in the church, the gunmen went to the homestead village and killed people there,” Bishop Ayom said. “The gunmen burned down the whole village in Makol Chuei.

Another attack in Jalle village killed an Anglican archdeacon, Jacob Amanjok, along with three pastors. More at –
