Archbishop Tutu’s 80th birthday

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, born 7 October 1931 was an outspoken opponent of apartheid and the first black archbishop of Cape Town. He received the Nobel Peace Prize on 16 October 1984. He is one of the fathers of the “Rainbow Nation” of South Africa.

Archbishop Tutu is a member and chairperson of The Elders. The Elders is an independent group of global leaders who work together for peace and human rights. They were brought together in 2007 by Nelson Mandela, who is not now an active member of the group but remains an Honorary Elder. The Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is also an Honorary Elder.
