Christian Aid has launched an emergency appeal to enable its partner organisations in the Philippines to reach more people who have lost their homes and livelihoods in floods caused by Typhoon Washi, which struck the southern island of Mindanao early on Saturday (17 December).
Christian Aid, which has already allocated £50,000 to relief work, will distribute emergency supplies in the Cagayan de Oro port area, including rice, mineral water, canned goods and cooking oil. Mats, blankets, mosquito nets and cooking utensils will also be given out.
These will go to 700 families in Consolacion and another 250 families in Macasandig.
In the port area of Iligan, a further 1,000 families in Sinaplanon, San Roque and Tambo will receive cash transfers to enable them to buy food in local markets as they have lost any means of earning an income.
Christian Aid has worked with local partners in the area before. The agency says it is well placed to identify the most vulnerable members of the affected communities.
The response is being co-ordinated from Manila.
Christian Aid is a member of the ACT Alliance, a global coalition of 100 churches and church-related organisations that work together in humanitarian assistance and development.
