LEADERSHIP
The local church will stand or fall on the ability of its leaders to lead’, says Chris Hollies (left) of Leadership First. Chris will be presenting 2 seminars where he looks, firstly, at what we can do to invest in leadership development in our churches . . . and, secondly, he opens up the SHAPE concept which seeks to help churches establish an ‘every member minister’ approach.
Matthew Spriggs will present Church as a Gathering of Small Communities where he discusses the church structure adopted by The Crowded House in the UK. Matthew will discuss how the structure works – and what the benefits are to Church life, mission and discipleship.
Paul Coulter, who delivered a much appreciated seminar on ‘every member ministry’ last year, will present a thought provoking session on Missional Thinking. Paul says, “We need to rediscover God’s missional purpose for His Church in our culture and allow it to shape the way we organise church and live the ‘rest of our lives.'”
LOCAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Debra Green a regular visitor to Northern Ireland this year, will be presenting a seminar and discussion at Church Resources 2012. Debra will speak on the work of Redeeming Our Communities (ROC) in the UK. As National Director of ROC, Debra will tease out what it means for Churches to form partnerships with other community groups, the police, the fire service, local authorities and voluntary agencies. With 7 more seminars in this stream – you really will have to read the full programme to grasp the wealth of input on this subject at Church Resources 2012. With presentations from Messy Church, Christianity Explored, Street Pastors, Family Mediation NI, ACET and EA plus Ambassadors in Sport speaking on how you can use football to bring hope in your community – this is an amazing array of discussions and resources for churches who want to engage with their local community.
PASTORAL
Facing up to the reality that in many of our churches we have a ‘fire-fighting’ / reactive approach to pastoral care, Matthew Spriggs of The Crowded House will tackle the question of how to Develop a Culture of Pastoral Care in Your Church.
Closer to home, leaders of the Lighthouse Hostel and Beach House in Ballymena will discuss their approach to empowering and enabling addicts to live a quality life as God has intended.
Are you frustrated that so many Christians fail to reach their potential? The Freedom in Christ Discipleship course is a proven and effective way for churches to help every Christian to become a fruitful disciple. This seminar will be presented by Jude Graham: FIC co-ordinator in N.I. Jude has been running FIC courses since 2006.
YOUTH
In What Does Sesame Street Have to Teach Us About Our Pre-School Ministry? – Ruth Bromley (Children’s Development Officer with PCI) looks at children’s TV programmes and asks if techniques and skills used there can be applied to ministry with pre-school children.
Brett Pitchfork of Friends & Heroes travels down a similar road in a presentation Children See and Remember! Brett contends that Bible stories told for children, need to be presented in a visual, fun and interactive way.
How to engage with young people in the community is a perennial issue for leaders of local churches. Come and spend an hour with Mark Welsh as he deals with Devising a Strategy for Youth Work in Your Church. Mark, an elder in New Mossley Presbyterian church, has a refreshing vision for youth work which combines a genuine love for young people with ‘being real’ about our faith.
