Bishop Andrew Forster will be installed as Bishop of Derry and Raphoe in St Columb’s Cathedral, Londonderry at 4pm on Sunday 5th January.

Public Lecture on Francis Hutcheson

In Union Theological College, Belfast by Prof Ian McBride (University of Oxford) on Tuesday 14 January 2020 at 7.30pm. “Francis Hutcheson in Ireland, Scotland, and North America”

Ian McBride, who grew up in County Armagh, is the Foster Professor of Irish History at the University of Oxford and a fellow of Hertford College. His research interests include the history of Ireland in the Long Eighteenth Century and the history of Northern Ireland since 1920.

This free public lecture will explore the life of Francis Hutcheson in the transatlantic world. Hutcheson (1694-1746), a son of the manse at Drumalig, Co Down, went on to become a leading philosopher of the Scottish Enlightenment, influencing Adam Smith, David Hume, and several of the signers of the Declaration of Independence in Colonial America.

Handling the Word – Ards Presbytery

Saturday 25 January 2020 & Saturday 1 February 2020 .10.00 am. Greenwell Street Presbyterian Church, Newtownards. This course is organised by Ards Presbytery but is open to people from other Presbyteries. A charge of £30 will be made to cover the expenses involved in running the course. The Ven David Alexander McClay will be consecrated or ordained as Bishop of Down and Dromore by The Archbishop and Primate of All Ireland The Most Reverend Dr Richard Clarke, assisted by other bishops.

New Wine 3–day Leadership Conference

The Leadership Conference is taking place in the Sligo Park hotel from 4–6 February 2020.

The conference is open to all those in some form of church leadership and usually attracts a wide variety of people from across Ireland. The speakers this year are Paul and Becky Harcourt and Paul and Priscilla Reid.

The conference will be hosted by Rt Rev David McClay (Leader and Chairperson, New Wine Ireland) and Revd Simon Genoe (Assistant Leader New Wine Ireland).

C of I Vocations Retreat

The Church of Ireland is holding a ‘Vocations Retreat’ at the Dromantine Centre near Newry from 7-9th February, 2020. The retreat is entitled ‘It’s Your Call’ and it will offer those considering ordination an opportunity to explore their vocation. Anyone who is considering such a step should contact/email their Diocesan Director of Ordinands for an application form.

Saturday Night Live hosted by Bangor Parish

Bangor Parish is the venue for the first Saturday Night Live of the New Year. The theme is ‘Being An Apprentice’ and the speaker for February is Hannah O’Neill, Children’s and Youth Pastor at Hope Community Church. There will be worship led by the SNL band, prayer, Bible teaching and food.

Installation of the Bishop of Down and Dromore in Dromore Cathedral

The Bishop of Down and Dromore will be installed in his cathedra (teaching chair) in The Cathedral Church of Christ the Redeemer, Dromore, on Sunday 9 February at 3.30 pm.

Bishop David will be installed by the Dean, The Very Revd Geoff Wilson. The bishop will preach on the ministry of teaching – acknowledging the leaders, lay and clerical, who exercise this ministry in their parishes. It is hoped that as many of these leaders as possible will be present.

Parishes in the Diocese of Dromore are invited to attend, although there is a second event in Down Diocese if this does not suit.

Service of Institution, Kilkeel

The Revd Canon Alison Calvin will be instituted as Incumbent of the Parish of Kilkeel on Thursday 13 February 2020 at 8.00 pm. The preacher will be Bishop Ken Clarke.
