The hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church should examine its conscience as it tries to figure out why the people of predominantly Catholic Ireland voted overwhelmingly in favour of same-sex marriage. When 60-plus percent of the voters said the nation’s constitution should be changed to define marriage as a union between two people regardless of their sex, it was a shot heard around the world. And, it was a repudiation of the church’s leadership in Ireland and in Rome.
