Bishop fears recession will lead to more riots
The Way – The Bishop of Bath and Wells is concerned that with no end to austerity in sight, that the Churches must be ready to respond in case of more social unrest.
Addressing the General Synod in York on Sunday, the Rt Rev Peter Price said he was praying that there would be no repeat of last August’s riots across England but warned that “social tensions will not go away”.
He praised the way in which churches in the riot-hit areas went out onto the streets to support the police, reach out to rioters, and help in the clean-up.
However he said it was an indictment of the state of British society today that “emergency ministry” from the Church was necessary.
“None of us need reminding about the financial crisis that has been the background to all our politics and policies for the last four years,” he said.

Rioters were having a ’spiritual experience’, says bishop. This is why Anglicanism is dying
Telegraph – It’s the Church of England’s General Synod, when atheist commentators traditionally tell the Church that it must adopt more progressive policies in order to win their approval.
Which is a bit strange. I don’t really care what policies the Socialist Workers Party adopts because I’m never going to join however they dress up their creed, which I believe to be fundamentally false. So I don’t know why atheists care what the Anglican or Catholic Churches do with themselves.
Not that Anglican leaders do not deserve the scorn they attract; this year’s award for silliest comment must surely go to the Bishop of Bath and Wells, who said that last August’s riots were a “spiritual experience”.

Words for Worship
With many people no longer growing up in the church it can no longer be assumed that newcomers will know the Lords Prayer or how to respond when a celebrant says The Lord be with you. It is partly with newcomers in mind that Church House has published a new book exploring the rich worship in the Church of England today.
“Words for Worship” is a succinct handbook offering easy-to-understand explanations of the prayers, responses, creeds and canticles that have been passed down by centuries of believers, many going back to medieval or early Christian times.
