Church Army becomes Living Wage Employer
Church Army has been accredited as a Living Wage Employer.

The Living Wage scheme was launched in 2001 to ensure people receive a wage that is enough to cover the basic cost of living.

Paying a living wage, as opposed to the minimum wage, has been linked to improved morale and lower staff turnover.

The Living Wage Employer mark recognises and celebrates this leadership.

Mark Russell, Church Army Chief Executive, said:”I am delighted that Church Army is now a Living Wage Employer. This means that Church Army pays not just the minimum wage, but the living wage.

“Church Army is committed to alleviating poverty and we believe signing up to be a Living Wage Employer is an important part of literally putting our money where our mouths are.

“I would like to challenge the rest of the Church of England to sign up.”

Churches challenge Governments green commitment
Four major British faith groups have warned that the Government’s draft Energy Bill would set the UK up for failure on carbon targets.

The Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Methodist Church, the Quakers in Britain and the United Reformed Church have warned that, in its current form, the Bill undermines the Government’s commitment to meet the UK’s carbon targets.
They say that more green jobs could be created by a stronger commitment to sustainable, secure and affordable renewable energy.

Bishop Nazir-Ali offers support to disaffected Tory grassroots over same-sex marriage proposal
Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali has written to Conservative Association Chairs across the country, offering assistance in navigating the issues surrounding the Coalition’s proposal for same-sex marriage. The letter came ahead of his speaking engagements at the Conservative Party Conference this week.

A ComRes poll published over the weekend revealed that the Coalition’s plan for ‘Same-sex marriage’ has caused great concern amongst Conservative grassroots leaders. More than 70% of local Conservative Association Chairs believe that the PM should drop the proposals. A similar percentage believes that the issue has worsened David Cameron’s standing in the party and that the majority of local party members oppose the changes.

Bishop Michael yesterdy (09 OCT) spoke at an event organised by the Cornerstone group of MPs entitled ‘Is there a moral future for Britain?’

Today  Wednesday (10 OCT) he will debate the Coalition’s plans for same-sex marriage with Dr Phillip Blond, Tim Montgomerie and Matthew Parris.

Faithbased tree chocolates cant use Cadbury purple
The Bishop of Chelmsford has come to the defence of the Meaningful Chocolate Company after they were advised that their purple packaging clashed with Cadbury’s.
The Meaningful Chocolate Company has been forced to redesign its faith-based Christmas tree chocolates after being advised that ‘Advent purple belongs to Cadbury’.

“Cadbury should reflect that before they even existed, the colour purple was around and – perish the thought – after they have gone, it will still be here,” said Bishop Stephen Cotterell.
