This afternoon (Saturday) at Evensong, at 3pm, in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, Canon Victor Stacey will be installed as Dean in succession to Dr Robert MacCarthy who has retired from the stipendiary ministry. The service will be attended by both the Archbishop of Armagh and the Archbishop of Dublin, who, as Prebendary of Cualaun, is a member of the cathedral chapter. They will be joined by representatives from state and civic life and by several ambassadors. The Papal Nuncio will attend as will representatives of the main Irish churches. No tickets are required for this service and all are welcome. Those who cannot attend in person may view the installation on St Patrick’s streaming service, www.stpatrickscathedral.ie/live-screening.aspx?ln=1. Streaming will start jsut before 3pm.
The new dean, who was elected by the cathedral chapter last month, has been Rector of Dun Laoghaire since 1995. He was elected to the Chapter of St Patrick’s, as Prebendary of Maynooth in 1997 and has been a member of the Cathedral Board since 2002.
This evening (Saturday) at 8pm in St Bartholomew’s Church, Dublin, the Gaudete Singers, directed by David Leigh, will give a concert of works by Stravinsky, Bruckner, Gabrieli and Schutz.
Tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 10.45 am RTE 1 will broadcast a Passiontide Reflection with Canon Maureen Ryan while in the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin, the final address in the ‘6 Voices 6 Psalms’ series will be given at the Choral Eucharist by Dr Roja Fazaeli, Lecturer in Islamic Studies in TCD, who will speak about Psalm 139. In the afternoon in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Killala, the Revd Wendy Callan, Rector of Kilmoremoy, will be installed as Dean of Killala.
Palm Sunday will be celebrated tomorrow (Sunday) evening in St Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen, with a performance of Stainer’s Crucifixion by the Armagh City Choir. This will be the first in a series of Holy Week services in the cathedral where each evening, at 7.30pm, there will be a Service of Meditation and Hymns with a different theme each evening.
On Tuesday the Bishop of Derry & Raphoe will join the Revd Ian Henderson, President of he Methodist Church in Ireland, for a Holy Week service in Monellan and at 8pm in St Peter’s Church, Bandon, there will be a concert in aid of the Simon Community. Family historians may like to know that the ‘Dead Money’ programme, featuring Steve and Kit Smyrl, which will be transmitted on RTE 1 at 7pm, was partly shot in the RCB Library, a place of constant resort for the genealogical community.
The lunchtime recital on Wednesday in St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick, will be ‘Music for Voices’ by Voci de Vecci and in the evening, at 8pm, the National Chamber Choir will sing in Calary parish church, Co. Wicklow.
On Good Friday the Archbishop of Dublin will conduct the Three Hours devotions in St Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, from midday until 3pm. In the evening he will join Archbishop Martin for a Good Friday Procession from Christ Church Cathedral to the Pro–Cathedral. Following a Prayer Service in Christ Church at 7.15 pm the procession will begin at 7.30pm and conclude with a Taizé Service in the Pro–Cathedral at 8pm.
