Compline at Good Book Shop
The Good Book Shop was the unusual location for a service of sung Compline which took place on Thursday 29 March 2012 at 8.45pm The service was partly done as a way of preparation for Holy Week, but also as a way of marking the 350th anniversary of the English Book of Common Prayer. Compline is traditionally the final church service of the day. In the Anglican tradition, Compline was originally merged with Vespers to form Evening Prayer in the BCP of 1662. The Church of England’s proposed Prayer Book of 1928 restored a form of Compline to Anglican worship. The male quartet who sang the service included the shop manager Richard Ryan, Dr Paul Berry conductor of the chamber choir ‘Sciolto’ and Robert Thompson organist in St Molua’s Parish Stormont, and conductor of the Priory Singers. The cantor on the night was Revd Jack Kinkead, curate in St Finnian’s Parish Church, Cregagh.

Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving for Titanic
There will be special service of commemoration and thanksgiving on the anniversary of the sinking of Titanic at St Anne’s Cathedral on Sunday 15 April at 3.30pm.

It will begin by remembering those who died and include elements of the original memorial service in the Cathedral in 1912. The “Titanic Funeral Pall” will also be dedicated. It was commissioned by St Anne’s as a permanent reminder of the loss of life and of the Christian hope of resurrection.

As the service progresses it will reflect the trauma felt in Belfast in the aftermath of the sinking but move on to capture and celebrate the emergence of the Titanic Quarter.

Special guests and the congregation are invited to join clergy as they walk from the cathedral to the Titanic Quarter. They will stop for brief reflections at ‘The Kit’ and the Drawing Office, finishing at the Thompson Graving Dock.

Symposium on “The Bible in the Church of Ireland”
The Biblical Association for the Church of Ireland (BACI) and the Church of Ireland Theological Institute (CITI) are hosting the “Bible in the Church of Ireland” Symposium, 21 April 2012, at CITI, Braemor Park, Dublin 14. The event will run 9:30–4:00, and all interested parties are most welcome to attend and participate.

The place of the Bible in the Church of Ireland has been little discussed, despite the assumption that it is central and essential for Christian life. Further, controversies related to the use of the Bible are a major factor in the Anglican Communion’s strife in general. The “Bible in the Church of Ireland” symposium will explore and discuss how the Bible is, should, and could be used and read within the Church of Ireland. This will be looked at theologically as well as in relation to academia, the Anglican Communion, and the Irish context. Speakers include Professor David Ford (Cambridge University), Professor Gordon McConville (Gloucershire University), Mr. Stephen Lyon (Anglican Communion Office), the Most Reverend Dr. Michael Jackson, and the Right Reverend Michael Burrows.
The event only costs €35 / £30, including lunch; students may attend for €15.

In the footsteps of St Patrick
Tyrone Times – ESCORTED by PSNI Sgt Danny Walsh and Constable Maoliosa Donnelly of the Stewartstown Neighbourhood Team on their bicycles, parishioners from Brackaville, Donaghendry and Ballyclog Church of Ireland parishes celebrated St Patrick’s day with a walk through the countryside. The walk linked the two ancient sites of Donaghendry and Ballyclog, believed to have been established as churches by St Patrick himself. Local historian, Robin Abbott, told the walkers about the violent acts which took place on the sites during past history. The Rector, Reverend Andrew Rawding, led prayers at the start and end of the walk. “That’s the first time I’ve ever celebrated St Patrick’s Day”, commented one parishioner afterwards. It is planned to hold the event again next year, with more participants walking in the steps of St Patrick.
