Christian Aid launches West Africa crisis appeal
Christian Today – The Sahel region in West Africa is on the brink of a major food crisis. Close to 13 million people are facing acute hunger and malnutrition in the Sahel region of Africa, Christian Aid has warned.
The aid agency said the situation had been brought on by a “perfect storm” of failed rains, widespread drought, spiralling cereal prices, migrant unemployment, and mass population displacement due to regional conflict.
It has launched an appeal to continue its programme of food distribution across Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

Emigration minister proposal from clergy
Examiner – The Government has been urged to appoint a minister for Irish emigrants by the RC Episcopal Council for Emigrants. Bishop John Kirby, who heads the council, said a political response was needed because the scourge of emigrating affected every family.

And, he said, ministers travelling abroad for the annual St Patrick’s Day celebration should always ensure they meet with Irish emigrants and chaplaincies.

”Such an initiative would have a dual human benefit: we in Ireland would be reminded of the plight which faces our emigrants and our emigrants would be reminded that support exists for them at home,” he said.

According to the CSO, in the year ending Apr 2011, 40,200 Irish nationals emigrated, up 45% from the same period a year earlier and triple the level three years earlier.

The bishop said they chose to launch their Irish emigrant pack just before St Patrick’s Day because the country’s beloved patron saint was a migrant.

The pack will be available on www.catholicbishops.ie and in parishes in advance of St Patrick’s Day.

It will also be available at ferry ports and airports.

Church of Ireland schools ‘to be hit by budget’

School Days ie – This year’s budget could mean that many Church of Ireland schools will have to cope with reduced teaching resources, it has been claimed.

Bishop of Meath Richard Clarke told a conference in Dublin this week that up to three-quarters of such schools may lose a mainstream teacher within four years, the Irish Times reports, which will leave them “seriously damaged”.

His view was echoed by Father Michael Drumm, chairman of the Catholic Schools Partnership, who said the cuts will have a “disproportionate effect on Protestant schools”.

The Irish Passionist priest is Rector of St Gabriel’s Retreat in the Graan, but his term there is due to end soon and he will probably be sent elsewhere.

Benedictine Monks from Oklahoma move to Stamullen Priory
Catholic.org – They seek to bring healing to a wounded Irish Church. I believe they are a first fruit of her restoration and a sign of her future contribution in a new missionary age. God has not abandoned the Church in Ireland. The Purification of the Church always precedes her healing, strengthening and renewal. So it will be in Ireland.

Pope blesses and rings Eucharistic Congress Bell
CNI – Pope Benedict has become the latest, in a quarter of a million pilgrims, to have rung the Eucharistic Congress Bell when it was presented to him at a Papal audience in Rome on yesterday (Wednesday).

The Pontiff listened as Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, President of IEC2012, spoke to him about the Bell and the four icons that accompany it, which represent the four parts of the Mass and correspond to each of the four stages of the pastoral preparation programme for the Congress.

Pope Benedict blessed the Bell and proceeded to give it a loud ring.  The tolling of the Bell calls people across the world to the Congress, which takes place from June 10 to 17 in Dublin.

Members of IEC2012’s organising committee, which included Fr Kevin Doran, Colette Furlong, Sheena Darcy and Tommy Byrne also presented the Pope with a bowl of Irish shamrock to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, along with the first commemorative medal struck to mark this year’s 50th Congress.
