West Cork Ringing Festival
Irish Times – I’m at the West Cork Ringing Festival in Abbeystrewry Church in Skibbereen, an event established eight years ago by Oxfordshire-born Diana Pitcher to teach aspiring locals how to ring the six tuned bells that were installed there in 2002. Now, each year, change-ringers from all over Ireland and England arrive to ring the bells of Skibbereen, Rosscarbery and Bandon as they were meant to be rung.

Fairtrade shop and church in dispute
A dispute over rent arrangements with the Presbyterian Church has led to the imminent closure of the Province’s only Fairtrade shop. After a decade of selling clothing and other goods from producers in the developing world, Fairtrade Inspire will pull the shutters down at their Spires Shopping Mall shop in Belfast for the last time at the end of the month. The Spires building is owned by the Presbyterian Church which has defended its position – saying the church had shown “a lot of goodwill” towards the Fairtrade shop, but there was nothing more that could be done.

Orders €400m short of abuse redress target
Examiner – Stalled negotiations have left religious orders €400m short of the compensation target set by the Government for abuse redress contributions.Just one out of 18 orders has accepted the principle that, together, they should shoulder 50% of the €1.3bn abuse redress bill.
Intractable dispute
Examiner – The Sisters of Charity has revealed its desire to sell lucrative tracts of land around Dublin which it no longer needs. The sites are part of an international asset portfolio it valued at €233m in 2009, when the government of the time looked for a report of its affairs as part of the plan to renegotiate the redress package. That 2009 report identified its entire land bank as being restricted, because it was still in use.

How gay marriage went mainstream
Irish Times – The gay marriage bus is revving up. In the driving seat is Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, sporting a big red T-shirt with the message, “Civil partnership is NOT marriage equality”. Behind him, highly excited, the latest crew to leap on board: the entire membership of Cork City Council. Hovering around the door is the Fine Gael Minister Leo Varadkar, murmuring that he’ll “probably” hop on at some stage.
