May 1st Sunrise Greeted with Song from Tower of St Anne’s, Shandon
St Anne’s – Shandon hosted its fifth ‘Shandon Sunrise’ at 6.02 am on 1st May . The dawn was greeted from the tower of St Anne’s in song by the O’Boyles (father and son) with Voci Nuove Chamber Choir.
This was followed by a celebration of the Eucharist in the church. This event has become a much loved annual event and marks the ancient celebration of the first day of summer.
Martin Luther King’s son coming to Londonderry
News Letter – The son of Martin Luther King will visit Londonderry next month as part of a major peace-building event, it has emerged.
Martin Luther King III who was invited by Presbyterian Minister David Latimer will speak at the Bright Brand New Day event, at Guildhall Square on Sunday, May 19.
Speaking to the News Letter, Rev Latimer said he believed Mr King have the inspirational effect on the people of the city, as his father had during the struggle for civil rights in America.
“He is very a personable man, someone you can speak to easily and he is someone who listens.
“I firmly believe that he has picked up the torch left down by his father whose life was ended prematurely, by his assassination,” said Rev Latimer.
“Mr King will use the non-violent philosophies of his father when he speaks to the people of Derry-Londonderry. I think he is the person who can move us forward into a proper shared future and beyond all this whataboutery which we are all tired of listening to.”
Mr King will Nobel peace laureate, John Hume, who received a Martin Luther King Peace Award for his work on the Good Friday Agreement and he will talk with local MLAs during a planned visit to Stormont.
Rev Latimer revealed that the Bright Brand New Day event will also feature Phil Coulter and The Priests.
“We are also going to have pupils from over 60 schools, each of whom will write a peace pledge – these will all be given to Mr King.
“This a great city and I believe we can push forward and Mr King can only help us do that,” added Rev Latimer.
Living Faith Series in St Patrick’s Cathedral
St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, is holding a series of talks in May. The Living Faith Series, entitled The Resurrection: what on earth does it mean? is being hosted by one of the Cathedrals Ecumenical Canons, Fr Kieran O’Mahony.
The series continues on Wednesday May 8 at 6.30 pm focusing on the subject:What happened on the first Easter?
On May 15 at 6.30 pm the question will be: Why does the resurrection matter?
Kieran J. O’Mahony OSA is one of two Ecumenical Canons at St Patrick’s Cathedral. An Augustinian and biblical scholar, he is the author of Do We Still Need St Paul? (2nd ed., 2012). His work in the Catholic Archdiocese of Dublin is focused on providing biblical resources for parishes and for people in ministry. Bishop of Connor to preach at Jeremy Taylor anniversary service
The Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, has been invited to preach in Cambridge at a Service of Choral Evensong marking the 400th anniversary of the birth of Jeremy Taylor
. The service will be held on May 5 in The Chapel of Gonville and Caius College where Taylor studied Renowned for his prolific and poetic writings, Jeremy Taylor was a Church of England Cleric who became a chaplain to King Charles I and was imprisoned several times during the English Civil War. At the Restoration, he was appointed Bishop of Down and Connor in 1661 and was soon also given the overview of the Diocese of Dromore. That year he commissioned the building of Dromore Cathedral. He was buried here following his death on August 13 1667. At the service in Cambridge, Bishop Alan, who is listed as ‘The Bishop of Connor & successor to Taylor’ will preach on ‘the Irish Anglican.’
