Sligo cathedrals featured

Sligo cathedrals were featured recently on the Extra.ie web site. Introducing the area it stated – The Two Cathedrals on John Street are not only stunning landmarks but are also steeped in history.

The Church of Ireland Cathedral of John the Baptist was designed in 1730 by the German architect who designed Leinster House. It also has a host of famous literary connections. WB Yeats’ mother married John Yeats, a young barrister, here in September 1863. A brass memorial to her is on the wall near the pulpit. Bram Stoker’s mother was also born nearby.

Next door, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception dates back to 874. Sligo Abbey, meanwhile, was founded in 1252 by Maurice Fitzgerald. The site contains a great wealth of carvings including Gothic and Renaissance tomb sculpture.

If you are a WB Yeats fan, Sligo has a plethora of attractions dedicated to one of Ireland’s most famous writers.

The poet chose the peaceful churchyard at Drumcliffe in County Sligo as his final resting place, with its stunning location at the foot of Benbulben Mountain.

The Yeats Building, meanwhile, is red-bricked with a timbered upper storey stands on the corner of the bridge. It is the headquarters of the Yeats International Summer School and houses the Yeats Society Library. Outside the Ulster Bank, there is a memorial to the poet.

Minister for Education in Raphoe service on Sunday

The Minister for Education and Skills in the Republic, Mr Joe McHugh TD, will feature in the Raphoe Group of Parishes’ Sunday Service this coming weekend.

Since the lockdown began, the weekly Sunday Service, which goes out on the parishes’ Facebook page every Sunday at 12 noon, has included a ‘Community Interview’ with someone who is out working in the community, and getting their perspectives and thoughts about the coronavirus and how it has affected them.

They have already interviewed a Director of Nursing from a nursing home in Letterkenny, a shopkeeper, a national school principal, a GP – all of them highly-esteemed essential workers – and this Sunday, 2ist June’s guest is no exception.

Incidentally, Minister McHugh broke the news recently of a €80,000 award to the Raphoe Cathedral Restoration Fund, granted from the Republic’s Historic Structures Fund and Built Heritage Investment Scheme.

Former Methodist President says ‘Thank you’

Speaking a few days ago, EBM Superintendent Rev Brian Anderson paid tribute to the MCI Communications Team and Departments of the Church for their work especially since the restrictions on public Worship Services as a result of Covid-19.

Referring to the updates and material on the website and the regular online Worship Services, Brian said this had proved to be a helpful resource across the Connexion and played a significant part in helping Churches be creative in establishing fresh worship styles and communicating with congregations

Going forward Brian referred to the challenge for all of us to maintain this effective communication approach across all levels of the Church to reach out to the community.

Parish choir’s Ode to Joy tribute

As a tribute to Ireland’s Frontline Heroes, and as part of European Music Day, the parish choir met, suitably socially distanced, to record ‘Ode to Joy’. At 6pm today some of Ireland’s finest musicians and singers will perform this beautiful piece, streamed live from the steps of the National Concert Hall. After this, our choir and singers and choirs from all over the country will upload their recordings on Facebook.

Food for thought

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.

Points for Prayer

Today pray for garment workers. There are fears their rights are being eroded as factory managers are using Covid-19 as an excuse to wrongly dismiss hundreds of workers. Pray for an end to this injustice and the protection of worker’s rights.
