Health watchdog visits Donegal nursing home after six deaths in two weeks
TheJournal.ie – Five people are said to have died over the last five days at the privately-run nursing home near Buncrana. Officials from the HSE and HIQA are at the home today as an investigation continues.

Mentally ill homeless five times more likely to kill
Examiner – Homeless people with a mental illness are five times more at risk of killing other people or themselves than people in the general community with such an illness.
The finding emerged from research conducted by mental health services in Cork published in the Irish Medical Journal.

RTE awaits watchdog ‘priest’ ruling
Belfast Telegraph – The broadcasting watchdog has concluded its investigation into the RTE Prime Time Investigates programme which defamed priest Kevin Reynolds. A decision has been made by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) on whether the national broadcaster breached regulations in the controversial Mission to Prey documentary.

RTE ‘hit by sudden loss of €70m’ Noel Curran reveals
Independent.ie – RTE DIRECTOR general Noel Curran last night revealed how the station was hit by the sudden loss of €70m in revenue. In a speech to the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (IBI), Mr Curran said Ireland had suffered the biggest drop in broadcasting revenue in Europe since the recession began.

Government to spend €50m on new children’s detention centre in Lusk
Independent – YOUTH offenders will no longer be sent to the notorious St Patrick’s Institution in Dublin within the next two years, Children’s Minister Frances Fitzgerald has vowed. Around €50m has been secured to complete the National Children Detention Facility at Oberstown, near Lusk, north Dublin, she announced.

Poor test results are blamed on teen exam fatigue
Independent.ie – EXAM fatigue has been partly blamed for the poor performance of Irish 15-year-olds in international reading and maths tests. It may be more a case of “don’t care” on the part of Irish students, rather than “can’t do”, according to a new analysis of the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results.

Bóthar appeals for help to airlift 70 UIster dairy cows to Romania
Belfast Telegraph – Bóthar Northern Ireland is asking local farmers and the local community to support their campaign to airlift 70 friesian dairy cows to Romania in an activity that will be the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. The aid organisation, which aims to create a sustainable living environment for communities in the developing world, is looking for farmers to donate their dairy cows as well as seeking funding from the public to purchase the livestock.
