Kingsmills families delay walk
News Letter – The families of 10 Protestant textile workers murdered by the IRA in south Armagh have decided to postpone a controversial walk this Saturday which was to retrace the last journey of their loved ones. The walk, intended to press for justice for those killed in the Kingsmills Massacre in 1976, was to follow the 3.5-mile route from Glennane to Kingsmills, where the IRA singled the men out by religion from a minibus and gunned them down with 161 bullets.

Barnardos head urges public to contact charity with ‘chugger’ complaints

Irish Examiner – Barnardos chief executive Fergus Finlay is inviting members of the public to get in touch with the charity if they are not happy with its on-street collectors. The practice, officially known as “direct recruitment”, seeks to attract regular donors to support a charity’s cause. It is governed by a code of practice and carried out by identifiable individuals usually with clipboards, carrying ID and working in twos or threes on city streets.

Tullamore Church leads RTE’s Service on Sunday
Offaly Express – This week’s (February 26) Service on Sunday will be led by members of Tullamore Presbyterian Church who, through readings, songs and prayers will be reflecting on Jesus stilling the storm and applying the meaning of this two thousand year old Biblical story to today’s Ireland.The service was recorded two weeks ago in the Donnybrook studios in Dublin. Pre-recording has become the norm now for Protestant services due to very strict budget cuts in RTE.

Death of former Chief Scout
Dundalk Democrat – Over 800 mourners and nearly 40 priests turned out to pay their final respects to the former Chief Scout of Scouting Ireland and Past President of The Irish Association of Funeral Directors yesterday (Monday, February 22). Dundalk is mourning the loss of Peter Dixon, a lifelong scout and undertaker who has been dubbed by many as a “true gentleman”. The 81-year-old from St Nicholas Avenue and Bridge Street, Dundalk died peacefully at home on Friday last.

Gardai search for weapon after farmer shoots brother-in-law and then hangs himself
Independent – A Church of Ireland family is at the centre of a tragedy in an Irish farming community. Post mortemexaminations were taking place today on the bodies of George Rothwell (71) and his brother-in-law Michael Jordan (51) whose bodies were found in Carlow after a dramatic fatal showdown over land. Gardai suspect that the in-laws and neighbouring farmers exchanged shots – Mr Rothwell was fatally injured and Mr Jordan subsequently hanged himself.
