Lambeth brief

The Archbishop of Canterbury’s engagements this week include Theological Education Day, The Annual Lambeth Inter-Faith Lecture and a Christian- Muslim Youth conference on fair trade.

Theological Education Day

Today, the Archbishop of Canterbury will host a morning seminar for theologians and members of the Archbishop’s Examination in Theology Council.  The theme is The Liberal Arts in the context of Liberal Economics.  Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint will be one of the speakers.

The Archbishop will give a talk in the afternoon, picking up on points made in the morning seminar and looking at research that the Church can feasibly commission in the current economic climate.

Later in the afternoon a Lambeth Diploma and two Lambeth MA degrees will be awarded to students who have successfully completed courses of study under the Archbishop’s Examination in Theology.

Annual Lambeth Inter Faith Lecture

On Wednesday June 8, the Archbishop of Canterbury will host a lecture by Professor Malcolm Evans at Lambeth Palace. The lecture, entitled ‘ Advancing Freedom of Religion or Belief: Agendas for Change’, will be delivered to an invited audience of about 100 religious leaders, ambassadors, civil servants and lawyers.

Malcolm Evans is Professor of Public International Law at Bristol University.  His lecture will argue that religious groups need to engage with human rights debates in order to create a more positive definition of the concept of religious freedom.  ‘As people of faith it is up to us to champion the causes of others as well as of ourselves.’

The Lambeth Inter Faith Lecture has been taking place since 1977.  Previous speakers include Dr Luke Bretherton (2009) and Professor Anantanand Rambachan (2008).

Christian Muslim Youth Forum on Trade Justice

The Archbishop of Canterbury will host a meeting of the Christian Muslim Youth Forum at Lambeth Palace on Wednesday, June 8.  The focus of the event will be economic justice.
This theme draws on growing scepticism amongst young people about world economic institutions such as the WTO and IMF.  The Forum will ask how these institutions could be reformed in order to prevent Western powers monopolising resources and exploiting developing nations.

The discussions will look at how the Fair Trade movement is trying to take on major financial/inter governmental institutions and ensure that changes are made in future WTO agreements and in the planned review of the European Common Agricultural Policy over the next two years.

The event is organised by MADE in Europe and the Christian Muslim Forum.  Further information can be found at the Christian Muslim Forum website.
