Ulster Orchestra appoints Rosa Solinas as permanent chief executive
The Ulster Orchestra has appointed Rosa Solinas, currently head of music at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, as its new chief executive.
Ms Solinas, the first woman to lead Northern Ireland’s largest arts organisation in its 47-year history, took up the post at the beginning of January and succeeds Ed Smith, the one-time chief executive of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra who had been a stop-gap CEO following the departure of former BBC music producer Declan McGovern in March last year.
Welcoming the appointment, orchestra chairman Sir George Bain said: ‘Having had a very strong field of national and international candidates to choose from for this post, we are totally confident that in Rosa Solinas we have someone who will drive this orchestra forward with passion and professionalism’.
With a master’s degree in development and innovation economics from Bologna University and a doctorate in musicology from Oxford University, Ms Solinas will leave the Arts Council after three years as its principal music officer. Since moving to Northern Ireland from her native Italy in 2004, she has held the positions of publications editor for Wexford Festival Opera, director of special projects for Opera Theatre Company and artistic director for the final two seasons of the short-lived, Downpatrick-based Opera Fringe Festival.
She has no previous experience of managing an orchestra and arrives as the 63-player ensemble and its 17 managerial and support staff have an uncertain future, in the face of standstill funding from the Arts Council and a reduction of £100,000 in support from the BBC over the next two years. Church venues alter vibe of live gig
Irish Times – What is it that people are looking for when they go to a gig? Good music and a chance to let their hair down at the very least? We all know venues that deliver on that promise. But lately punters have been lured to churches masquerading as music venues …
