Ecumenical Concert supports World Development
A cross community choir from Northern Ireland is travelling to Limerick to give a concert in support of Christian Aid Week and Trócaire at 7.30pm on Saturday 12 May.

Bishop Trevor Williams said:

“ ‘Voices Together’ will join the Limerick Villiers School choir in a programme entitled ‘Colours of the World’. ‘Poverty Over’ is a dream for all of us facing hard times. But for millions of our global neighbours their lives depend on making that dream come true. Christian Aid believes that Poverty can be eradicated.  Donations from this concert to Christian Aid Ireland and Trócaire will help make this happen.

“ ‘Voices Together’, a choir of Catholics and Protestants from Northern Ireland, will provide a programme featuring songs from the Christian Church around the world. Villiers School choir will be singing extracts from their production of Les Miserables. Donations are welcome and all the proceeds will be split between Christian Aid and Trócaire. If you can’t be there, you can contribute by phoning 061 396244. Join the movement to end poverty.”

Second round of Choral Training Bursaries Scheme

AOIC – A second round of The Arts Council funded Choral Training Bursaries scheme has an 11th May deadline.  The aim of the programme is to assist established amateur choirs in accessing high quality training programmes for their singers in the areas of sight-singing, ensemble singing, musicianship and vocal production.  The scheme is open to children and youth choirs that operate outside of the formal education system.

Independent, community-based choirs, choral societies or singing groups which are more than one year in existence, are eligible to apply, provided they have a core committed membership and a regular programme of activity.   Priority will be given to applicants who were unsuccessful in the past or who did not apply in the first round of applications.

Applicant choirs must also have a committee or governance structure and up-to-date public liability insurance. Joint applications from a number of choirs are to be encouraged.

Under the new choral bursaries scheme, outlined above, interested choirs will need to identify and recruit experienced and excellent trainers to undertake this training for them.

As the bursary fund manager, AOIC is precluded from giving advice about or recommending people for this training.    However, we can provide contact details for expert tutors who live in your area and /or who have made it known to us that they are available and interested in tutoring choirs.   Under the terms of the bursaries, choirs are encouraged to engage with expert and highly skilled tutors either from within or out of their own local areas.

Conductor in Training 2012/2014

To mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Irish Youth Choir and building on the success of the IYC Conductor in Training Scheme, RTÉ Performing Groups have come on board in a unique partnership to offer a funded and extended trainee choral conducting programme for 2012/14.  In addition to access to IYC’s artistic director Greg Beardsell and to the all activities and programmes associated with the Irish Youth Choir, the successful applicant for this new programme will have access to the RTE performing groups, in particular to the RTE Philharmonic Choir and Orchestras.  For the first time, a bursary is to be made available to assist the 2012/14 conductor in training to engage with this unique opportunity.

The Irish Youth Choir 2012 residential course will run from 23rd June to 1st July. At its conclusion two concerts will be given – 30th June as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival and 1st July in St Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin. In addition, the IYC will perform at Kilkenny Arts Festival on August 11th. The Irish Youth Chamber Choir will reassemble in the autumn of 2012 for a number of performances. The successful candidate will play the fullest part possible in all IYC activities as performer (s/he will sing with the choir) and understudy for Greg Beardsell. There will be an opportunity to conduct the IYC in one piece in public performances: other opportunities will arise to give additional support and training to singers during the annual residential course, during Irish Youth Chamber Choir rehearsals and in other Irish Youth Choir training contexts.

The successful candidate will also have access to the widest range of experiences in RTÉ.  S/he will work the RTE Philharmonic Choir, taking line and sight singing rehearsals and s/he will deputise for RTÉ Philharmonic Choir Chorus Master and IYC artistic director from time to time.   S/he will have access to range of key RTE performing groups personnel including the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir Chorus Master, RTÉ Choral Officer, RTÉ Philharmonic Choir accompanist, Feargal Caulfield as well as access to a range of expertise across radio production, sound/technical staff, marketing and PR.  The RTÉ Philharmonic Choir will give a series of concerts though out the 2012/13 season and these will be announced at the end of April 2012.  In addition to the concerts listed above, IYCC will give concerts in the autumn, details of which are to be finalised.

Irish Youth Choir/ RTE performing groups are seeking applications for the position of Conductor In Training for 2012/2014 with a closing dates of Thursday 17th May 2012.  Shortlisted applicants will be notified on Tuesday 22nd May and interviews/auditions will take place in early June (probably 9th June t.b.c.) in Dublin.

This competitive mentoring opportunity is open to musicians in the early stages of their conducting career who have had some experience of conducting choirs. Candidates should be aged 35 years or under on Saturday 23 June 2012. As part of the audition process, short-listed applicants will be interviewed and will be invited to conduct singers from the Irish Youth Choir and the RTE Philharmonic Choir in a prescribed piece, the title of which will be provided closer to the date of interview and audition.

Interested conductors should submit a letter of application, along with a CV outlining their conducting experience to date to Liz Kelly, CEO (acting), Association of Irish Choirs, University Concert Hall, Foundation Building, Limerick, or email aoic@ul.ie.
