Weekend on Cape Clear Island for Cork Youth

Recently Cork Diocesan Youth Council (CDYC) took a group of 22 young people and leaders to Cape Clear Island for the weekend.

They were joined by Simon Henry from the Church of Ireland Youth Department (CIYD), all the way from Northern Ireland.

There were lots of adventures: snorkling, kayaking, a long walk in the fog for Sunday morning service in Irish, in fact there were lots of very long walks with Judy Peters at the front guiding the group. Google maps didn’t work though as reception is poor on the island, so everyone had to trust the tour guide! Simon held workshops on the topic of Jesus Matters.

There was a fancy-dress quiz on Saturday evening as well. Everyone had to dress up as their favourite thing and strut their stuff on the “catwalk”. Music was provided by the in house DJ Daragh! Even Simon “Cowell” flew in especially to judge the competition!

The weekend was finished off on Sunday with a boat trip out to the Fastnet lighthouse.

Two OLM Deacons ordained in Clogher Diocese

The ordination has taken place in St. Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen of Colin Brownsmith and Abraham Storey as Deacons, the first in Clogher Diocese following their training in Ordained Local Ministry.

The ordination was conducted by the Bishop of Clogher, the Right Revd John McDowell on Sunday, 15th September 2019. Bishop McDowell told a large congregation of friends and family members and representatives of parishes where both Colin and Abraham have served as Diocesan Readers, that this was an important day for them and reminded them it was not merely taking up a new job. “€œThey are taking up a new order, a Holy Order. It is not simply a change in what they do but what they are, ministers of God,” he said. The preacher was the Venerable Cecil Pringle, Archdeacon Emeritus, who said this OLM training was a new step in ministry.

Both Colin and Abraham had trained alongside members of the Methodist Church as well as side by side with colleagues in the Church of Ireland.

Revd Colin Brownsmith will serve one year in St. Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen, assisting the Dean, the Very Revd Kenneth Hall and Revd Abraham Storey will serve for one year in the Grouped Parishes of Maguiresbridge and Derrybrusk with the Rector, Canon Mark Watson.

South Kilkenny Historical Society tour of Inistioge

2019 saw the fifth Heritage Week Mystery Tour for South Kilkenny Historical Society when they visited the village of Inistioge.

This has proven to be a very successful event and this year was no different.Local man, Andy Cotterell was the guide for the evening and he enthralled the attendance with his knowledge and stories.
On a beautiful Sunday evening on the bank of the river Andy recalled personalities, living conditions and ways of life to a very appreciative audience. He pointed out the locations of the Methodist Church in Inistioge (now in private ownership) and of the many schools in the village.
He also explained that the Tighe family played a very important role in the provision of education in the area and stated that, unlike most other areas in Ireland, there was no animosity between them as landlords and their tenants. He also recalled the good relationship between the Catholic and Church of Ireland communities in the area and mentioned the presence of both Catholic and Church of Ireland bishops at the funeral of Lady Louisa Tighe when she died in 1900.
He pointed out the unique bridge crossing the river at Inistioge – unique because it is the only bridge in Ireland with 10 spans of equal size.

Christian Aid: Climate strikes are prophetic movement sweeping the globe

Responding to the global climate strikes, Christian Aid’s youth and camaigns manager, Richard Baker, said:

“The youth climate strikes have been nothing short of prophetic. One seemingly defiant act of protest by a 16-year-old girl in Sweden has grown into a thundering movement for change that is sweeping the globe.

“The climate strikers are pointing the way, it’s now time world leaders and big business take heed and take action. This week at the crucial summit in New York we need to see countries making new pledges to cut their emissions and stronger commitments to help the poorest communities already suffering from the climate crisis.”
