Prayer for Today

Reconciling God, we pray for those in rural communities who feel lonely. May those who work on the land and who live in remote villages feel your presence, your comfort and your strength. May justice and peace reach out and touch their lives. As we become more aware of country-dwellers' struggles with depression, isolation, confusion and uncertainty, may we all work together to build a sustainable future.Cisco 350-023 test May those in town and country, cities and villages be reconciled to you. We pray in the name of the Good Shepherd. Amen.

Opinion – Without a vision …

Stephen McIlwaine writes for Contemporary Christianity - The BBC’s Fergal Keane recently filed a report from South Africa where he recalls how few people, in the closing days of Apartheid, had much hope for the country, most expecting it to be torn apart by a bloody race war. No one imagined that within a decade, South Africa would be a successful non-racial democracy.

Prayer for Today

Grant, O Lord, that the light of your love may never be dimmed within us. Let it shine forth from our warmed hearts to comfort others in times of peace and in seasons of adversity, and in the bright beams of your goodness and love may we come at last to the vision of your glory; through Christ our Lord. Amen. St Columbanus (c.550-615)

Prayer for Today

Help us, O Lord, never to nurse the grievance that separates us from you and from one another. Grant us grace to forgive those who have wronged us. May we know that no sin is so great that it cannot be confessed; no wound so deep it cannot be healed and no sinner so lost that grace cannot bring them home. Amen.

Bookspot – Former nun who kicked the habit

It was the Swinging Sixties, the world was in the grip of Beatlemania, hemlines were rising and bouffants, beehives and free love were all the rage. But in the midst of this cultural revolution, 18-year-old Eleanor Stewart from Oxfordshire decided to turn her back on a life of parties and boys and enter a convent as a nun. The news was met with relief by her parents and a mixture of consternation and unbridled hilarity by her friends.

Prayer for Today

Lord God, we become used to your blessings,
and assume that you will continue to bless today
the things you have always blessed in the past.
Remove the scales from our eyes,
that we may see the things
you wish to bless in our own day,
 and give us holy imagination
to perceive what you will bless tomorrow. Amen.

Opinion – Church of England’s ethical lending could be a healthy alternative to regulation

With its plans to sponsor credit unions to put pay-day lenders out of business and its backing of a consortium bidding for more than 300 RBS branches, the Church of England, under Archbishop Justin Welby, is looking to become a significant player in consumer lending. Andrew Lilico writes in The Daily Telegraph.
