SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

John 10:27 My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

The Age of Enlightenment didn’t do us any favours in terms of learning how to trust human intuition. Hundreds of years later, I still feel programmed to rely on measurable outcomes that claim to be without bias. I thank God for people who have helped me unlearn that often-unhelpful logic; I am especially grateful for Audre Lorde, who wrote in her landmark essay, Poetry is Not a Luxury:

“As we become more in touch with our own ancient, black, non-European view of living as a situation to be experienced and interacted with, we learn more and more to cherish our feelings, and to respect those hidden sources of our power from where true knowledge and therefore lasting action comes.”

I am learning to trust the wisdom of my body, which I have learned is often the vessel through which God and my ancestors speak through and to me. I grew up hearing people tell me that I shouldn’t expect God’s voice to come out of a cloud and tell me what to do. No one ever told me, though, that I could learn to hear God’s voice speaking through my own heart.

MOVING FORWARD: Who has helped you unlearn faulty logic? Share the story of that lesson with someone you love today.
