SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Job 38:1-4 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.”

God is so sassy in this passage, and I love it. Like a mother taking her own child to task, here we see God reminding Job about exactly who Job is and who God is: “Remember this planet you’re standing on? Yeah, I did that. And where were you?”

This passage continues with a longer series of God’s rhetorical questions to Job, laying deep mystery into the story. In fact, the deep mystery extends into the very fabric of our planet, beyond the mastery of science or the realm of cognitive understanding. Just like Job, we would do well to be reminded that this deep and holy mystery is both natural and essential to life in this world.

MOVING FORWARD: Think of your own “whirlwind” moment or moments. How has God called you into account and blessed you in difficult moments?
