SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Jeremiah 33:14-15 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Jeremiah and I didn’t really get to know each other until I was in my late 20s and early 30s. This figure from the Bible became like a faraway best friend to me. In those strange days of claiming my adulthood and trying to live into my baptismal covenant in concrete and visceral, Jesus-loving ways, Jeremiah spoke right to me.

There are still days when I can almost feel him sitting next to me—being brutal and beautiful and real as he explains exile and restoration. When Jeremiah talks about hope—rising audaciously, spreading abundantly, and blossoming into reality—my breath catches in my throat, and I remember that God kindles a holy hope within us, and all things shall be well.

MOVING FORWARD: For what promises of God are you waiting? How is that going for you?
