SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

“I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others.”
Genesis 12:2 NLT

Living in an instant age where everything is available on demand, it is hard to reconcile God’s timing with my current lifestyle. I now watch programmes when I want them at a flick of a switch. I can fire up my laptop and work any hour of the day or night. I have access to information 24/7. Our expectations of instant response can have a negative impact on our National Health Service, where to wait any length of time appears to become an infringement on our human rights.

Abraham is stirred by God to complete the journey Terah began. He also discovers that the purpose of that journey was more than a simple change of scenery. God had a purpose. He was to father a great nation. The humour is not lost on one who is married to a barren wife. If anything reveals once again the impossibility of human intervention to realise God’s purpose, it is the entrusting of God’s plan to a childless couple. Yet, in doing so God demonstrates his authority and power over human affairs.

However instant our age may become, there is no way of escaping human anxiety over both the present and the future. We will always find something to worry about. God, though, reassures us that while his ways are never our ways, his ways will trump human endeavour and we shall find rest for our souls.

In church over the years I have heard and received many a prophecy. The danger with this great gift is that I can take what I hear literally and also begin to live out of my own interpretation of that prophecy. Seldom have I seen any prophecy work its way out as I imagined it would. Abram receives a prophecy that is impossible to believe, yet one he accepts, one that demands an action that has little to do with children initially as it requires he set out on a fresh journey and head for the land of Canaan.

QUESTION

Take time to reflect on what God has said to you in the past and what that still means for you today.

PRAYER

Lord, give me the faith to trust you when I cannot see how your word will come to pass.
