SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Luke 9:62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Jesus’ words to two potential followers seem harsh. One says he needs to bury his father, and another just wants to say goodbye to his family. Jesus tells both of these young men—and all of us—that following him does not work that way. Jesus’ call to follow him means we have to dispense with the kind of compartmentalization that makes many of us feel comfortable and safe. Jesus wants to be in all the compartments, all the time.

Jesus wants all of you. When we say we will follow him, we need to realize that this is not a half-hearted endeavor or something that we can just check off on Sundays. Jesus wants to be with us and in us and for us all day, every day.

MOVING FORWARD: Do you only want part of Jesus, or are you willing to have all of him—and give him all of you?
