SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Hebrews 6:13 When God made a promise to Abraham, because he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself.

The writer of Hebrews says that the steadfast anchor of our souls is Jesus. He is the ultimate mediator and advocate. Jesus’ example of grace and mercy bridges the gaps in our relationships to God and each other that are caused by our myriad transgressions, flaws, screw-ups and the sins of self-centered pride. Jesus does this miracle of love willingly.

Recently, the battery on our boat died while we were on the water. I put the anchor out and set it firmly before hailing a ride back to the marina for a new battery. One of my daughters asked, “How do you know the boat will be there when we get back?” I had great hope—a kind of confidence—that the boat would be exactly where we left it because of the integrity of our anchor. In the same way, Jesus provides hope in this life. He is the anchor of our souls.
