SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

Psalm 83:13 O my God, make them like whirling dust and like chaff before the wind.

You can hear the fear and anger of the psalmist in these lines as they call upon God to wipe out the enemies of Israel. Jesus teaches us to love our enemies, and yet who among us hasn’t wished for our enemies to have their comeuppance?

Petty vengeance is a pretty common human response when we’ve been injured in some way. But we also know that God’s promises to Israel have not been forgotten—nor have God’s promises to us. The Living God seems uninterested, unmoved, and unimpressed by our desire for power and prestige in this world. I find this rather comforting, and I appreciate the reminder that every human desire can be expressed to God—even our darkest ones—and God still loves us and keeps God’s promises.

MOVING FORWARD: What promise has God made and kept to you despite your struggles? Tell that story to someone today.
