SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

A farmer went out to plant some seeds…some seeds fell on a footpath, and the birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on shallow soil…But the plants soon wilted under the hot sun, and since they didn’t have deep roots, they died. Other seeds fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the tender plants. Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they produced a crop…
Matthew 13:3-8 NLT

Jayne and I both love cornflowers with their rich blue flowers. Earlier this year we enjoyed a lovely surprise when we saw how some had self-seeded from a previous year when they grew in a pot. These new plants grew along the edge of our patio, settling into the grass, and swiftly took over. They grew vigorously and created a glorious blue curtain between the patio and the garden which we enjoyed even from within the house.

How these seeds were deposited is a mystery. Blown by the wind or deposited by finches, maybe. Sufficient took hold to produce a harvest of flowers 100 times larger than the original pot planting.

And so it is with us. Freely depositing our gift, our personality, our hope or challenge as we pass through life may itself be the seed that goes on to produce a godly harvest. We do not need to audit or measure our life of faith. Rather, we can pray and then set about each day in confidence that we shall deposit seeds of truth across all the terrain our day carries us through.

Who each one of us is, will deposit that which is within us in every context where we go. I simply pray that those seeds I scatter will find fertile and receptive soil and in time produce a positive harvest for the enjoyment of all. God sends me out and wherever I go seeds of life are left in my wake. How much simpler can it be?

QUESTION

What unexpected harvest have you seen from an earlier seeding?

PRAYER

May your Holy Spirit guide me this day to do, to be, to say, to love, to pray and to witness to your great glory.
