Mark 6:4-6a Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.” And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.
The experience of being unappreciated by those who know us best is common; instead of seeing what we’ve become, others continue to think of us as we were in the past, perhaps as naughty children or as unfocused young adults. So it is with Jesus, who is remembered only as the carpenter’s son.
What interests me even more in this story is the phenomenon of blindness, the failure to recognize the truly wonderful when it happens. Having witnessed miracle after miracle, the people who have known Jesus the longest are totally unimpressed. Jesus is no doubt left shaking his head, amazed at their inability to see what is right in front of them.
Where have we seen a life turned around? A relationship between enemies healed? Where have we witnessed courage?
