SPEAKING TO THE SOUL

John 5:5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.

Illness can sometimes arrive like a slow-moving rainstorm. Many mental health problems sneak up like a rainstorm that might let up for a while but never seems to completely move on. And then rain comes down in buckets, soaking everyone involved. The man from today’s reading has been waterlogged for thirty-eight years. To this man’s great fortune, he comes upon the great sunshine of Jesus’ face and receives the healing he has been waiting for.

Not all of us have these kinds of miraculous healings. Sometimes the skies do not part. Sometimes the clouds of depression don’t burn away. Sometimes it’s hard to even believe that a loving God exists. At times like these, we can do nothing else but cry out to God in prayer, “I believe; help me in my unbelief!”

MOVING FORWARD: If you or someone you love is suffering from depression or mental illness, bring your troubles to God. You might also consider seeking help with a mental health professional.
