RSCM Celebration Day Service – Exeter
The leading countertenor James Bowman will be travelling to Exeter in June to be made a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music (FRSCM). Dr Bowman will be one of a number of leading church musicians to receive honorary awards for services to church music of national and international significance. They will receive their awards at the Royal School of Church Music’s (RSCM) annual Celebration Day service, which this year takes place in Exeter Cathedral on 16th June 2012 at 3.00pm.
Lindsay Gray, the Director of the RSCM and himself a countertenor, is delighted that Dr Bowman has also agreed to sing during the service. “James has been a trailblazer in promoting the countertenor voice, which is a key element in much sacred music, particularly in cathedrals. Over many years he has gladly offered his considerable vocal support to choir schools and choral traditions.”
Around two hundred singers from church choirs throughout the south-west of England will be taking part. The massed choir is to be directed by Dr Noël Tredinnick (Director of Music at All Souls’ Church, Langham Place in London), and they will be joined by the cathedral choir and organist David Davies, as well as a small instrumental group. The music includes a piece from Ghana, as well as choral favourites by Stanford and Brahms. Hymns include “Angel voices ever singing” and “Christ is made the sure foundation”.
“Celebration Day is indeed a happy occasion and a musical feast,” says Lindsay Gray, Director of the RSCM. “It’s always very thrilling and uplifting to hear a large choir in a wonderful building such as Exeter Cathedral.”
All are very welcome to join the congregation for the service, which begins at 3.00pm.
