South Africa – Campaign to stop gender based violence

Today the Anglican Church of Southern Africa will  officially join an international campaign to end violence against women and girls known as the White Ribbon Pledge campaign. 

At the Women’s Day service at St Georges Cathedral Cape Town today, Tuesday (9th August), the bishops of the Dioceses of Cape Town, False Bay and Saldanha Bay will be signing a pledge on behalf of their churches “Not to commit, condone or remain silent about all forms of Gender-based violence.”

NZ: Cardboard cathedral proposed for 'quake-hit Christchurch

Christchurch leaders have revealed the unconventional design they want to use for the city's temporary Cathedral and it is made out of cardboard.

USA: Grants will fund conclusion of work on same-gender blessings

Church Divinity School of the Pacific has been awarded a $90,000 grant from the Arcus Foundation and a $75,000 grant from the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation to support the completion of work on proposed rites for the blessing of same-gender relationships in the Episcopal Church, according to a release from the school, located in Berkeley, California.

Iraq – persecution of church continues

Church bombings are increasingly becoming an issue in Iraq: just as a Baghdad court sentenced three men to death for church bombing that killed 68 in October of last year, at least 20 people were wounded when a car bomb exploded outside a Roman Catholic church in central Kirkuk, Iraq, early Tuesday.
